Mon., Sept. 29th P's Waterloo Walk

Here is a Google map created from yesterday's walk and supplied to us by Jennifer from her Garmin wrist gps!!! Our thanks go to her not only for the map but for these statistics she provided also: ... distance = 10.68 kilometers, time = 2 hrs. 37 minutes, and calories = 590! We knew it was longer than usual ... right walkers??? We started and ended at the Butte de Lion marked with a yellow push pin on the lower left. Jennifer has also pointed out the Waterloo Golf course on the right hand side which we walked about on 2 sides.

Mon., Sept. 29th P's Waterloo Walk

Our gathering spot this afternoon took place at the parking lot next to the Visitor's Center at the Butte du Lion in Braine L'Alleud. Our thanks to P who led us safely across the N5 and around and about the historic Waterloo battlefield for the next several hours. It was a bit longer than usual ... but most of us survived!

Our group shot has a pastoral backdrop this time but one of the two horses ducked her head and missed her opportunity to appear on the WIC Walkers' blog! Better luck next time ... sweetie! With 15 of us on today's walk we managed to fill up the photo pretty well with out her.

Mon., Sept. 29th P's Waterloo Walk

We certainly enjoyed the many different and often lovely views that we passed through as we skirted around the Waterloo Battlefield on this September afternoon. With weather conditions due to change later this week we wanted to savor the end of the Indian Summer days we have been enjoying the past several weeks.

Rasta checked out some of the local "wild life" that we encountered along the route.

Another change of venue here as we emerge from a wooded area. We did have some sprinkles of rain during the latter third of the outing this afternoon and the wind picked up over the open fields.

We finally made it back to the Butte du Lion and passed through areas of sugar beets recently harvested along the side of the road. There is one such mound on the left.

About 10 of us were able to stay after the walk for refreshments which we found at the cafe across from the Butte du Lion and the Visitor's Center. We settled into a cozy corner and put several tables together to accomodate all of us. By this time in the afternoon though ... the group had had enough photos!

Fri., Sept. 26th Sandy's Boitsfort Walk

Here we gathered for this afternoon's group photo with Jane (left) pointing out a sign recently posted warning us not to pick any of the many varieties of mushrooms in the forest. We had a good turn out for the very beautiful fall weather we were to enjoy through out walk today.

Does this look like a serious walking group??? We think not ... but, it is hard to get ahead of them to try to take a photo of the group from the front. This was an attempt ... better luck next time.

Fri., Sept. 26th Sandy's Boitsfort Walk

It was indeed beautiful in the forest this afternoon as we made our way around the route. We were stopped by a forest ranger on a short cut to the tennis club for trespassing on a path for horseback riders only. Since we were almost at the end of the path we were let off with just a warning. We will probably not be traversing this route again until next spring. Whew!!!

Okay ... here's the sad story! We got to the Intero Tennis Club only to find it CLOSED!!! How could they do that on such a beautiful afternoon? A person in tennis attire said they would not be opening until 3:30pm this afternoon which was too late for us. Most of the walkers chose to go home after our return to the cars but 5 of us headed to Au Repos des Chasseurs where we had our refreshments on the terrace. With apologies to Christa who did not appear in this photo ... she was seated next to Lisa (right). Unfortunately the photo she was featured in did not turn out particularly well. Hopefully, next time ...

Jennifer has provided us with this Google Earth image of this afternoon's walk along with the following statistics ... distance 5.62 k's, time 1 hour, 17 minutes and we used up 290 calories. You can see the yellow push pin above the name "Plancenoit" in the middle toward the bottom of this photo. Our walk started off to the right through the fields. You can also see the N5 running along north/south to the left side for orientation purposes. "Thanks, Jennifer"!!!

Here is the first of our group photos which includes the Butte du Lion in the background. If you look carefully between our 2 Janes ... you will see we have left a space for the distinctive mound in the distance. Here we stand with the wind in our hair and spashes of sunshine in our faces and with Sue leading us today we enjoyed a great walk as well as great views.

Mon., Sept. 22nd Sue's Plancenoit Walk

It is that time of year ... the beginning of fall when the corn is high and the shadows are long. So, it was a beautiful afternoon to enjoy a walk on the outskirts of Brussels through rolling countrysides and down little lanes.

Another stop for a group shot with the "Butte du Lion" in the back ground. Sue, our leader today (right of pink) led us on splendid routes through countrysides which gave us many views of this famous landmark.

Those of us who could stay for refreshments met up again after the walk at Miam. We were happy to have Sheila (2nd left) join us here this afternoon so that we could all catch up with her. We all enjoyed the time to relax after such a nice outing.
