Deborah's walk in Lier on 14th November 2011

On a cold foggy autumn day 12 walkers ventured out to the picturesque town of Lier. We began the day with a beautiful brisk circular walk around the town. In the past this area was the original wall now it is a continuous walk of paths and lovely trees The walk continued through the town stopping at various interesting sites: The gorgeous Grote Markt which at present is an archaeological dig, the medieval Zimmer tower with its wonderful animated centenary clock, the delightful bronze sheep sculpture ( a humorous reference to the people of Lier known as sheep heads) which everyone had fun riding. We wandered through the cobbled streets to the Beguinage now a UNESCO world heritage site, a wonderful area of 11 cobblestoned streets and over a hundred tiny houses, one of which was open is now a lace maker's atelier. We were greeted by the only male lace maker in town who explained the techniques and the importance of the lace industry in Lier. Lunch was sumptuous and some also tried the famous little cake "liers vlakie" with a warming coffee. Thank you Deborah for leading and organising this delightful walk!

Thank you Anna for these very nice photographs and interesting report
